Blue Raiders head north to take on rival WKU to close out regular season

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Softball heads up to Bowling Green, Kentucky this weekend as the Blue Raiders (19-31, 6-15 C-USA) will take on the WKU Hilltoppers (32-11, 14-7 C-USA), who are tied for first in C-USA East, for their final regular season series of the season at WKU Softball Complex.

The Blue Raiders open the series on Friday at 6 pm, before playing game two on Saturday at 1 pm CT and then closing out the series on Sunday at 1 pm CT.

Blue Raiders

Middle Tennessee enters this weekend’s series with a 19-31 overall record and a 6-15 mark in C-USA play. The Blue Raiders are just coming off their weekend series against the LA Tech Lady Techsters, which the Blue Raiders fell in all three contests.

The Blue Raiders have been led by freshmen Laura Mealer and Anyce Havey, as well as sophomore Amaya Harris so far during the 2022 season. Mealer is batting a team-leading .355, while slugging a team-high .619, and has connected on a team-best 55 hits, including a team-leading 10 home runs and two triples, as well as seven doubles this season. Mealer has also scored a team-high 34 runs and is tied for the team lead with 28 RBIs. Harvey has batted a team second-best .328, while tying for third on the team with 40 hits but leads the Blue Raiders with 11 doubles and is tied for the team lead with 28 RBIs. She also ranks tied for a second on the Blue Raiders with two home runs this season. Harris has batted a .309, ranking third on the Blue Raiders this season and has connected on a team second-best 46 hits, typing for a second with a pair of home runs and connecting on four doubles. She has also scored a team second-best 20 runs and has plated a team fifth-best 12 RBIs.

Seniors Corrina Dodd and Gretchen Mead have led the Blue Raiders in the circle this season. Dodd has produced a team-low 2.73 ERA and has produced a team-best 6-5 record in 16 appearances this season. Dodd has pitched five complete games, including a complete-game shutout against Murray State, with 77 innings of work this season. She has allowed just 32 runs, 30 of which were earned, on 61 hits for the Blue Raiders. Mead ranks third on the team with a 4.01 ERA and holds a 4-10 record over 26 appearances in 2022. Mead leads the Blue Raiders with a career-best 90.2 innings pitched and has posted four complete games, including a complete-game shutout against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Mead also leads the Blue Raiders with a career-best and season-high 69 strikeouts so far during the 2022 campaign.

Scouting the Hilltoppers

The Hilltoppers enter this weekend’s series tied for first in C-USA East and boast a 32-11 overall record and a 14-7 record in C-USA play.

Taylor Davis and Taylor Sanders have led the Hilltoppers this season. Davis is batting a team-leading .403, with a team-best 52 hits, including four doubles and a triple. She also leads WKU with 36 runs scored, is tied for the team lead in stolen bases with 18 and is tied for fourth on the team with 17 RBIs. Sanders is batting .374 and ranks second in the Hilltoppers with 46 hits this season, including a team-leading 12 doubles and a team second-best eight home runs, as well as knocking in a team and C-USA-leading 47 RBIs and scoring a team second-best 30 runs.

In the circle, WKU has been led by Shelby Nunn. Nunn boasts a 1.72 ERA and has collected a 19-6 record in 33 appearances for the Hilltoppers. She has thrown 150.2 innings so far this season, recording 14 complete games, including six shutouts and three combined shutouts. Nunn has struck out 106 batters, and allowed 54 runs, 37 of which were earned, on 124 hits and held opposing offenses to a .213 batting average.

Series History

WKU holds the all-time lead 43-31 between the Blue Raiders and the Hilltoppers. WKU also holds the all-time advantage for games played at WKU Softball Complex, 22-15. However, the Blue Raiders currently hold a two-game winning streak, including a 3-2 win during the last meeting between the two programs last season on April 18, 2021.
